The first thing you need to do is open a Betfair account. It is free. (And you will find cash incentives on offer, like a free £25 bet). There are several steps on the application form, but none of them is complicated.

Locate "Football multiples". You can find this on the home page, under the "Football" heading, or on the football page. Clicking here will open the Multiple coupon. In the very left hand column you will see the headings of the coupons where multiples are available. For the purposes of betting on football, the main ones that apply are "All sports" and "Football Correct Score, Over/Under, Half Time/Full Time".

The particular market in which you wish to place a bet will determine which of these two sections you choose. If you need to bet on the match odds(1x2) market, you should choose "All Sports". By clicking here you will be led to a list of sports, from which you should choose "coupons", followed by "Football match odds coupon". Here you will be presented with the fixtures sorted by competition or, via a pull down menu, by date. This area is where you locate the multiple coupon for match odds (you will choose one outcome from home team, draw or away team).

You will be presented with the list of fixtures to the left hand side. Opposite each fixture you will notice six buttons, alternating in colour from blue to pink, one blue and one pink for each outcome of home, draw and away. The blue button should be clicked if you wish to back the outcome or the pink button if you wish to lay. (As far as we are aware, this is the only platform which provides a facility to lay an outcome as part of a multiple).

To select your predicted outcome, follow these simple steps:

  1. Click on the single appropriate button from the six available. Your selection will appear to the right hand side under a heading "Selections chosen".
  2. Decide what permutations to use when allocating your stake. There will be a box for each bet type, depending on how many selections you have chosen. For example, if you have chosen four selections, you will be presented with a box each for four-folds, trebles, doubles and singles. You can adjust the amounts you place in each box until satisfied that your total stake has been correctly allocated. A conventional yankee will have one pound/euro in each bet type box, totalling eleven units.
  3. When the option appears, and you are ready, click on "View odds". The potential return for each bet type will be shown, along with the odds calculated for each bet type.
  4. Click on "Place bets".
