Answers to questions about this Web site

What is a ‘black swan event’?

‘Black swan events’ are what we call football match results which are improbable, even highly improbable, but which actually come about. Most of the world took it for granted that all swans were white, until black swans were discovered in Western Australia. Most of the world's swans still are white—but black swans really exist.

Answers to questions about bets

 What is laying?

A standard bet backs a result to happen. Betting against the result happening is called ‘laying’.

 What is a yankee bet?

A yankee bet is a type of full cover bet, or combination bet. You select 4 football matches, decide what the outcome will be, then (in effect) make 11 separate bets: 6 doubles, 4 trebles and a fourfold accumulator (sometimes called a quad). If you get all 4 right, you can win a lot of money. You have to get at least 2 right to get back any of your stake.

What is a full cover bet?

A bet consisting of all possible doubles, trebles and accumulators across a given number of selections.

 What is a double?

A bet on 2 matches. You have to get both right to win anything.

 What is a treble?

A bet on 3 matches. You have to get all 3 right to win anything.

 What is an accumulator?

A bet on four or more matches. You have to get all of them right to win anything.
